As the title says I am working on bringing an old xm8 back to life. I found this wannabe space rifle at a local surplus shop about 2 years ago and there it sat collecting dust. Recently I finally decided to adopt this forgotten relic and give her a taste of plastic combat that she is longing for.
For those who don't know what a xm8 is, check out google.
Essentially the U.S. Army was watching to much starship troopers/aliens, and decided that they needed a large plastic bodied star weapon. it'smost simular to a H&K G36 (internals are alittle different).
The project was abandoned,but....It appears that Malaysia adopted a few.
Back to the project. I want to bring new life (on a budget) to this gun and make it combat ready. So far my first plan was to drop a Dsg'ed gearbox into her, however she didn't take to it. So a standard gearbox it in order. My budget is between 100 and 150 USD.
What I need:
Gearbox (probably will build one from scratch from my parts bin to save money and to give the parts a purpose)
New metal outer barrel assembly
New hop up and barrel
Maybe new sight there is an aluminum on on evike for $70
Aluminum for reinforcing the body
So far I am $30 in on the project with the purchase of the gun itself.
How bad is it? Well it's all plastic... I mean all plastic save a few metal body pins ,screws, wire and the motor. All is not lost though it takes a standard v3 gearbox so I can just drop that in. The scope/sight it comes with is just a tube for looking through and is just cosmetic. The stock is adjustable but works. The body creaks like a haunted house door, but is mostly solid.
Well that all the time I have now l, stay tuned for updates as the project is worked on. Feel free to offer any advice or comment. I will post pictures as I work.
